RCCG’s ₦30 Billion Fundraising: How Nigerian Mega Churches Drain the Poor in God’s Name

20250810_121221

The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) has launched a ₦30 billion fundraising campaign to expand Redemption City and repair aging infrastructure. Church leaders present the appeal as a voluntary opportunity for members and “well-wishers” to support God’s work and receive divine blessings.

But behind the polished sermons and worship songs lies a calculated business model. For decades, Nigerian mega churches have perfected the art of collecting massive sums from worshippers, promising prosperity, miracles, and breakthroughs in return. Sadly, these blessings remain elusive for most, while the churches grow richer and their leaders live in luxury.

The Business Model of Faith

Redemption City is not just a religious camp, it’s a vast urban empire complete with residential estates, schools, banks, and businesses. In many ways, it operates like a private religious corporation, except that it enjoys tax exemptions while generating billions.

Yet, outside its gates, surrounding communities remain underdeveloped, with poor roads, high unemployment, and limited access to healthcare. Imagine what ₦30 billion could do if invested in public services, yet this fundraising will primarily expand church property and influence.

Emotional Leverage as a Revenue Tool

The brilliance, and danger, of this system lies in its emotional leverage. Worshippers are told that giving is not only generosity but a divine command, a test of faith. This emotional conditioning keeps members financially committed, even when they are struggling themselves.

While the average Nigerian battles inflation and unemployment, pastors enjoy private jets, global conferences, and personal estates. The gap between pulpit and pew has never been wider.

Breaking the Cycle

Until members demand financial transparency from churches and question these massive fundraising campaigns, the cycle will continue: churches grow richer, followers grow poorer, and blessings remain a promise instead of reality.
